Moving Back to Jamaica

A blog about my Move Back to Jamaica after 20+ years of living in the US. Most of the articles focus on the period from 2005-2009 when the transition was new, and at it's most challenging.

Making the Decision

All of my writing in this blog up until now has focused on what has happened in my move to Jamaica AFTER I made the decision to come home.

However, I am slowly realizing that it might be helpful to share some of what I haven't shared, about the process of deciding to come home.

There actually was a moment when I had resigned myself to living in New Jersey... a deep, dark time that I thought about staying in what some called "the arm-pit of America."

I think many Jamaicans are living in the middle of a decision of whether to come home to live or not. There is an ongoing mental argument that includes the pros and cons, with the decision probably finally coming down to "the money."

Or maybe not?

I'd love to hear from the readers of this blog, either privately or publicly, anonymously or not...

Are you thinking about moving back to Jamaica? What are some of the things that you think about? What are some of the pros and cons? What is the percentage chance of you returning to live before retirement?

In this case, my decision process was not typical, for various reasons I'll discuss soon, and I think we'll all benefit from hearing from a few people other than me!

Yes i would like to know what made you decide, or what made life in America not enough for you.

I want to go back home to live and pave the way for others to come back because as many as badmouth our own land, many more wish they could return, even young ones...they just don't know HOW. And then we meet our significant others, get married, have kids...and for most, that is the point at which it is too late.

if i end up remarried before i get down there and it's not to someone who is down there or wants to move there...that's it, i won't leave my family to go home...so I am hoping di ting sort out before dat!

Francis, I am more than eager to hear about how you decided to make the transition home and what steps you took mentally, physically and financially to make the move successful.

I am thinking of heading home to Barbados myself, but I am just now hitting my career stride so part of me keeps delaying b/c of my desire to gain more career accomplishments.

But, this nagging voice telling my that if I wait to long, I'll regret not going home sooner.

I met a fella Home who had left following the break up of his marriage and left two houses in need of selling. When asked why he didn't fully settle his affairs before leaving he said: "There's no place like Home." I agree.

It would be wonderful to hear you share your thought process and discuss. Thanks!
