A blog about my Move Back to Jamaica after 20+ years of living in the US. Most of the articles focus on the period from 2005-2009 when the transition was new, and at it's most challenging.

Sun, Sand and Savagery

The following article is based on many facts that must be considered in returning to Jamaica, but the angle is quite a "colonial" one.

Sun, sand and savagery: Whatever happened to Jamaica, paradise island?

Sadly, it is my belief and sole opinion that Jamaica is headed towards anarchy. Folks appear to be anesthesized to the continued raging violence that poverty, apathy, illiteracy, and corrupt politicians breed, but it is going to come to a head when the anesthesia wears off. The burgeoning frustration of the people is going to erupt into insurmountable violence, requiring marshall law. Those who genuinely have the Country's best interest in their hearts need to effect truce with warring factions, neutralize criminality, seek peace, and hold the inadequate government accountable; otherwise there will be no prospect of restoring law and order on the island. To continually empower the two political parties (JLP, PNP) alternately, time after time, is analagous to dipping two dirty mops in the same murky water, to try and wipe clean, the filthy floor that they have muddied over and over again.
