Moving Back to Jamaica

A blog about my Move Back to Jamaica after 20+ years of living in the US. Most of the articles focus on the period from 2005-2009 when the transition was new, and at it's most challenging.

Portia on the Hustings

I'm not sure what kind of comment this video warrants.

It's left me speechless.

I imagine that even the Prime Minister would not defend this particular display, and would agree that something _must_ change, starting with whatever allowed or caused this speech to happen the way it did on this particular night.

I find the video highly amusing. I have it on my blog and i have even followed up with a post asking folks if it is a help or a hindrance. I heard some people remarking how embarrased they were for the country, terrible behaviour etc...but then I have heard the helpers in my neighbourhood saying "Sista P nuh easy...dark dem up Mamma". So whose view should we take on?

well, this compilation of shots makes a good political ad. however, u may or may not know that the last bit about the tongue drawing is not something new, but was actually taken from a shoot some time in 2005 I believe, prior to her ascendancy to the 'throne'. At that time there was much public debate in Jamaica about it, and many felt that Sista P had been very well behaved and tolerant for a long time and had come to the end of her tether with some comments about her by the JLP.

I think the telling thing however is that at the time it was said, teh large crowd gathered in Half-Way-Tree, including the ranking people on the platform did not seem perturbed, most cheered in jubilation and agreement, cause Sista P was showing that like an ordinary Jamaica she know when to get on bad.

Honestly speaking however, since her becoming PM, she has really carried on quite circumspectly and with much dignity and decorum. So while I see the point of the ad, I don't know if I can use it against her, well the raucous part that is.

while this will give the middle class a few more 'files' for the "why-Portia-isn't-as-good-as-Bruce" portfolio, for the vast majority of the rest of us... it gives us something/someone to identify with.
Does that sound 'unlearned' or 'unthinking' of me, and others from my own background(like the helpers in jcan girl's neighbourhood)?
It probably does.
The reality of it is though... I'll take passion, trustworthiness and 'fight' over flippancy any day.
