Moving Back to Jamaica

A blog about my Move Back to Jamaica after 20+ years of living in the US. Most of the articles focus on the period from 2005-2009 when the transition was new, and at it's most challenging.

More on Skin Bleaching

No comment needed -- the video speaks volumes for itself on the topic of skin bleaching here in Jamaica. In this case the entire family bleaches.

They have been doing it for years but I don't think it worked

I saw a video at the UWI Reggae conference and it really saddened me. Bleaching comes like cosmetic surgery for the economically challenged.
I desperately want to move forward to JA but I sometimes wonder if everyone has gone mad. I miss the 80's when skin bleachers were ridiculed, now you look at the girls in videos of even pious artists, and "if you are black, step black" really seems to be the message.
Its going to take decades to fix this disaster.

The good thing is that the disaster can be fixed...

It saddens me to believe that some of us still refuse to accept and appreciate our various skin tones..its one of our traits that make us unique as a people..after watching the video, I was speechless...

It is obvious that alot of our women (AND MEN) are under 'mental' slavery. When you look at most of these women, they are the most hideous-looking things you'll ever see... Even the old, wrinkled women who are supposed to be grandmothers and great-grand mothers are bleaching (and hard too). They wear little or no clothes and ppl talk about 'ghetto girls'. That's crap..They look like Jezebels... No wonder the level of respect for women here in JA is reduced to zip. I personally dont know how a person can think they look beautiful with their skin burnt up all over, black knuckels and toes, blotchy complexion and huge red pimples all over their face, that seem as if they are going to burst and rot. They just have no self confidence. Quite frankly, they have no ambition because even a monkey knows NOBODY IS GOING TO HIRE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE WHEN THEY'RE LOOKING LIKE A DUPPY.

Let me just make it clear, and I know I am very late to this topic for discussion, but it isn't white supremecy that keeps them bleaching and in mental slavery, it's BLACK supremecy. Slavery is over, and I don't see white people saying to black people of darker hues that they are ugly. However, I do constantly see black people doing that to other blacks? I believe Jamaica doesn't think bleaching is really that big of a problem. If they did, they would start putting advertisements out there showing a bleached face versus a pretty dark skinned natural face (non-bleached) and how much society would prefer the darker face. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I have noticed just how ridiculous people are. They are and have been silly enough to watch television to change their behavior, so why not try to use television commercials, adds, billboards and the like to stop the use of bleaching creams? In case they don't already realize it, but Jamaica gets sun year round, and it is as damaging as it can get if one already has not top layer of skin to block these rays. When the majority of the country is suffering from skin cancer, and permanently damaged, rough, corrosive looking skin; I guess people will finally take things seriously.
-Proud to have never used bleaching cream in my life.

THE IMAGES THEY HAVE IN THE MEDIA IS ALMOST ALWAYS OF WOMEN WHO ARE NOT BLACK EVEN IN JAMAICA. THE COMMERCIALS ARE OF CHILDREN THAT ARE MIXED AND THIS IS WHAT THEY TELL BLACK PEOPLE IS BEAUTIFUL. YOU HAVE BLACK MEN WHO ARE PROUD TO SAY HOW MUCH THEY LOVE BROWNING LIKE THEIR IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEIR DARK SKIN. TO BE FAIR INDIAN AND CHINESE WOMEN BLEACH MORE THAN BLACK WOMEN. IN ASIA BLEACHING IS THE NORM. BUT LETS NOT FORGET "MENTAL BLEACHING OF THE MIND" THAT SO MANY BLACK PEOPLE HAVE WHEN THEY THINK MARRYING AND HAVING KIDS THAT ARE NOT FULLY BLACK IS MORE BEAUTIFUL.LOVE YOUR BLACK SKIN. BE PROUD OF YOUR DARK BEAUTIFUL COMPLEXION. BLACK MEN STOP PUTTING BROWNING AND WOMEN OF OTHER COLOURS ABOVE OF THESE POOR DARK SKIN WOMEN WHO DO THIS TO THEIR SKIN.
